"In order to understand the esthetic in its ultimate and approved forms, one must begin with it in the raw."
The name of the person who created the piece of art, the prestige of the gallery the art is shown in, the difficulties of the methods used to make the piece all change the aura of the piece of artwork. The artist's statement can add a completely different aura to a piece. A statement can transform a completely mundane piece into something intelligent. Sometimes a piece of art is only the statement. Duchamp was able to make art out of a toilet seat because of his name, and his statement about the piece. There are so many factors that change the aura of the artwork. It is hard to strip a piece of art of all these elements and see it for what it truly is. I feel that with Western Art, it is almost impossible to view the art in its raw form, stripped of all these factors.
RESEARCH::
my research is going well. i have found a lot of magazine articles and books on multicultural education that talk about it from all different viewpoints. I got a very good start on it over break. The more I read about the ideas of multicultural education and the benefits it provides the more i believe in it and am interested in it. I am very happy I chose that subject.

That is very good that you are allowing your reading and research dictate your process. It is wonderful that through all the research you are doing, you are realizing what you really are interested in. Hope all is going well for you!

ReplyDeleteYou are digging deeply into idea of the artist, the object and the audience - and their iterative relationships - changing and informing each in response to each other. Herein - this responsive nature, lies something important I think about the relationship between multi-cultural education, arts education, the arts and the artist. I am looking forward to reading your paper and hearing your presentation.
